Four new aircraft parking stands have become operational at Stansted, marking the completion of the first phase of airfield works forming part of the airport’s £600m transformation programme.
The 40,000sq m stand extension is the size of four premiership football pitches and is designed to boost the airport’s ability to handle more aircraft during peak hours to make airfield operations more efficient.
Principal contractor VolkerFitzpatrick poured several tons of concrete, laid 1,850m of cabling and installed 15km of drainage during the seven-month development.
Phase two of the transformation project is already under way and includes new taxiways, additional aircraft holding areas and a further 20 new aircraft stands.
Programme delivery director Paul Willis said: “Stansted is the only major airport in the south-east with the potential to grow in line with the government’s aviation strategy of optimising existing runway capacity.
“These new stands will provide extra capacity for aircraft to park, unlocking spare capacity and improving operations from the airport’s single runway.”
The transformation programme, one of the largest airport projects currently under way in the UK, includes a new arrivals terminal, reconfiguring the existing terminal into departures-only, revamped shops and restaurants and new car parks.
