The latest phase of the terminal transformation project at Aberdeen International Airport, a “Changing Places” facility within the departures lounge to make life easier for those who find travel challenging, has been officially opened.
Features include a height-adjustable bench, electronic hoist, non-slip floor and privacy screens. The facility can be accessed without the need for a key, and has an alarm system for any passengers needing assistance.
The airport, which has its own Access Forum linked to various disability organisations and charities, has been working to improve accessibility and inclusiveness and received a “very good” rating in the CAA’s most recent study.
Vicky Cruickshanks, an ambassador of Euan’s Guide, a disabled access review website, opened the facility alongside Phionna McInnes from Me Too Magazine!, an Aberdeen-based charity for children with additional support needs.
McInnes said: “I am delighted to see this ongoing programme to improve facilities for passengers with disabilities. It will reduce one of the barriers that prevent people with disabilities, their families and carers, from travelling.”
Airport duty manager Fraser Bain added: “Our commitment is towards creating a safe and welcoming environment for carers and passengers with disabilities to travel freely through the airport.”
