Delta expands

As the first Airbus A220-100 planned for delivery to Delta Air Lines made its maiden flight last week, the US carrier showed further signs of expansion with an increase in travel options between the US and Heathrow for next summer.

The UK increase will see the airline offering a daily flight to Portland International Airport, up from four times weekly this year, and a twice-daily service to Wayne County Metropolitan Airport in Detroit.

Delta’s seasonal Portland route is the only non-stop link from the UK and is operated in conjunction with joint venture partner Virgin Atlantic. Delta says the daily service will strengthen the partnership’s US West Coast footprint, complementing flights to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle.

Meanwhile, Delta also had its eyes on Quebec last week as its first Airbus A220-100, formerly the Bombardier CS100, made its maiden flight, marking another step toward entry into service of the compact narrow-body aircraft with a major carrier.

The aircraft took off from Mirabel, near Montreal, where the final assembly line for the A220 is located. Airbus said it was crewed by A220 programme test pilots and the successful flights lasted 2hr 53min.
