British Airways director of network, fleet and alliances Sean Doyle was named last week as the new chief executive of Aer Lingus. He replaces Stephen Kavanagh, who steps down on 1 January 2019 but remains on the airline board as a non-executive director.
BA and Aer Lingus are part of International Airlines Group (IAG), whose chief executive and Aer Lingus chairman Willie Walsh praised Kavanagh as “an exceptional chief executive (who) has transformed and modernised Aer Lingus”.
Kavanagh, who spent 30 years at the Irish carrier, added: “Aer Lingus has been successful in recent years and continues to have significant opportunity to build upon the strong fundamentals of our value model.”
Doyle, originally from Cork, joined BA in 2003 and has undertaken financial, strategy, commercial and alliance roles for the company, culminating in his appointment to the executive management committee in 2016.
Walsh said: “Sean has successfully held a variety of roles within British Airways, acquiring significant expertise and experience, which makes him ideally suited to lead Aer Lingus.
“I am also pleased Aer Lingus chief operating officer Mike Rutter has extended his contract and will work with Sean to ensure the airline continues to deliver its strong performance.”
