Cobalt looks ahead

Cypriot airline Cobalt will shortly open a fleet review as it looks ahead to 2020 and beyond, chief commercial officer Paul Simmons tells BTN.

“Our current six A320 series two-class aircraft are adequate for the present but we are ambitious and must look ahead to the next decade”.  He pointed out that Cyprus from time immemorial had been at the crossroads of civilisation.  “It’s the same today.  Larnaca Airport offers a perfect link for the Levantine countries to long-haul destinations not practical from their major cities”.  He expects considerable growth with connecting traffic.

Following the collapse of Cyprus Airways, Cobalt Air was incorporated in early 2016 and made its maiden flight on 1 June that year and now serves 12 destinations mainly from Larnaca International Airport where it is already the largest carrier.  Backing has come from AVIC (49% – the government-backed Aviation Industry Corporation of China) and a mixture of Cypriot and European investors.  The airline expects to carry close on 1m passengers this year as against 600,000 in 2017.

For winter 2018/2019 Cobalt will be moving its daily Heathrow – Larnaca service to new slot times LCA – LHR 09:00–12:00 and LHR – LCA 12:55–19:25.  With this schedule the airline will be able to offer much better connections at T3, particularly to and from North America.

BTN will soon carry a FLYING AT THE FRONT END on Cobalt Air, and a Cyprus ON TOUR.
