Airbus chases China order

A US$18bn (about £13bn) order with Airbus for 180 A320neos for China could be back on the cards thanks to China’s escalating trade war with the US, according to the Bloomberg news agency.

A high-powered delegation from Airbus including CEO Tom Enders and commercial aircraft president Guillaume Faury was said to be seeking to seal the sale, first reported in January, during a visit to Beijing.

The executives are in China to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Airbus’s first Chinese assembly line but Airbus refused to comment on the travel plans of management or confidential discussions with customers.

Chinese president Xi Jinping is said to be keen to announce an agreement next month at the China International Import Expo in Shanghai, where a series of deals emphasising China’s role in international trade are expected to be announced.

A possible order could also take centre-stage at the Zhuhai air show in southern China, which starts a day after the expo. China’s aviation authority, the CAAC, said last week it had had talks with Faury, but did not comment on the content of the meeting.
