Biofuel marches on

United Airlines last week pledged to cut its emissions in half by 2050 as it became the first to operate a transatlantic flight powered by biofuel with a service from the airline's hub in San Francisco to Zurich.

The emissions promise came from United CEO Oscar Munoz, who said the move  would eliminate 21 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year – the equivalent of taking all the cars off the road in both New York and Los Angeles.

Industry observers also noted it would save United a lot of money after Munoz revealed the airline pays $15,000 a minute for fuel and “using biofuel is a much cheaper option”.

Elsewhere, the latest Airbus A321ceo for New York-based JetBue Airways took off on its delivery flight from Alabama with 15.5% renewable fuel on board, continuing a trend Airbus began with its Toulouse delivery flights two years ago.

Five A321s are due to be delivered to JetBlue from Alabama by the end of 2018 using sustainable fuel supplied and certified by Air BP. Longer term, Airbus is looking at supporting industrial production of sustainable aviation fuels in the south-east US.
