An 18-storey hotel with two floors above ground and the rest below, including two floors under water, is due to open soon in China’s biggest city. The 336 rooms and suites all boast balconies where guests can view waterfalls from the surrounding cliffs.
The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, developed by the Shimao Group and managed by the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), is expected to open its doors in the fourth quarter of this year.
With a construction area of more than 621,000sq m, the luxury property has been set inside a former quarry in southwest Shanghai. Its planners say it is a contrast to the traditional architectural concept of building high-rises, truly reflecting the natural landscape of the quarry.
IHG said: “The hotel reaches down to 88m below ground to reshape the relationship between city and nature, turning an abandoned quarry into a treasure of wonder and beauty.
“The opening of InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland will prove to create unique and tremendous value to the city, standing out as a must-visit destination itself to welcome its growing numbers of guests”
