Wizz UK investment nears £1bn

Further expansion at its Luton base with the allocation of a ninth A321 Airbus and the launch of new routes to Lisbon from the end of October and Ukraine’s second largest city, Kharkiv, from mid-November has been announced by Wizz Air.

The newly-allocated aircraft means the airline, whose UK arm starts operations in the fourth quarter of this year, will increase frequency on three Luton routes, with flights to Kosovo's capital Pristina up from three to five a week.

In the other changes, flights to the Albanian capital, Tirana, will increase from three to four a week and flights to Satu Mare in Romania will go from two to three a week.

Wizz says the additional A321 at the Luton base will bring its total investment in its UK operations this year to almost $1bn and create additional jobs at Luton, where the team by the end of the year will have grown to more than 350, supporting 5,300-plus jobs in associated industries.

The new services announced bring the total number of new UK routes for 2018 to 19, and the number of new routes from Luton to 14, including Larnaca, Tirana, Tallinn, Bratislava, Lviv, Athens, Keflavik, Eilat, Grenoble, Verona, Bari and Tromsø.
