Amadeus in billion-dollar deal

The Spanish-based global travel technology giant Amadeus has surged into the independent and mid-sized hotel field with a deal to acquire TravelClick from private equity investment firm Thoma Bravo for more than US$1.5bn.

TravelClick, which is headquartered in New York, is a global hospitality provider serving more than 25,000 customers across 176 countries and offering cloud-based solutions.

These include a Central Reservation System (CRS) and Guest Management Solution (GMS) serving its sector, along with business intelligence and media solutions, giving hotels distribution reach across all channels, both digital and traditional.

Amadeus president and CEO Luis Maroto said: “TravelClick has a great team, great technology and a broad customer base, and we are looking forward to welcoming such a successful business into Amadeus.

“Our ambition is to provide the hospitality industry with the tools they need to grow their businesses and deliver a great experience to their guests. The combination of our two portfolios will allow us to provide that to hotels of all shapes and sizes across the world.”

The deal is the latest stride forward by Amadeus, which was set up 31 years ago as a neutral global distribution system (GDS) by Air France, Iberia, Lufthansa and SAS to connect providers' content with travel agencies and consumers in real time.
