Hypersonic in the spotlight

Among many highlights of the week-long 2018 Farnborough Airshow, which starts next Monday, 16 July, will be Boeing’s plan for a new hypersonic aircraft that the company says will enable passengers to fly from Europe to Australia in 5hr.

Unveiled at the American Institute of Aeronautics Aviation 2018 conference in Atlanta, the revolutionary machine could be available in 20 to 30 years and capable of travelling at five times the speed of sound, the equivalent of 4,000mph.

Boeing says the hypersonic would be smaller than its single-aisle B737 but able to accommodate more passengers than a typical low-range business jet. Engineers are working to develop the required technology now, the company added.

Kevin Bowcutt, Boeing’s senior technical fellow and chief scientist of hypersonics said: “We’re excited about the potential of hypersonic technology to connect the world faster than ever before.

“Boeing is building upon a foundation of six decades of work designing, developing and flying experimental hypersonic vehicles, which makes us the right company to lead the effort in bringing this technology to market in the future.”

The concept will join other Boeing visions of the future at Farnborough.
