Qatar London gateway No 2

Greeted by a celebratory water-cannon salute, Qatar Airways’ inaugural flight from Doha to Gatwick has launched a double-daily service by Boeing B787 Dreamliner, making the Sussex airport the airline’s sixth gateway into the UK and second to Heathrow.

The carrier says the new service, which is being increased to 16 flights a week over the summer, will provide more flexibility for passengers from Qatar to London, and enhanced connectivity to its extensive network for passengers flying in the other direction.

Noting the launch followed Qatar Airways’ start of direct flights to Cardiff (BTN 7 May), group chief executive Akbar Al Baker said the airline was delighted to be expanding its reach in both London and throughout the UK.

He added: “We are demonstrating clearly our continued commitment to this market. We are proud of our strong and extensive trade ties with the UK and look forward to offering more passengers the chance to explore our global network.”

Gatwick CEO Stewart Wingate added: “Qatar Airways’ level of service sure to prove popular with our passengers. This new route also strengthens Gatwick’s growing long-haul network, which has more than 60 routes and which we hope to grow still further still in coming months.”
