More Q400s for Ethiopian

A firm order for 10 new Bombardier Q400 turboprops for Ethiopian Airlines was announced on Friday, with deliveries scheduled to start in the second quarter of next year.

The firm order is valued at US$332m based on list price. Ethiopian, which already has 21 of the type in its 98-strong fleet with varying configurations of up to 78 seats, has also taken purchase rights for five additional Q400s.

Bombardier Commercial Aircraft president Fred Cromer said: “The Bombardier turboprops continue to deliver unmatched performance to our operators, and we are proud the flag carrier of Ethiopia is again recognising its tremendous value.”

“The market trend for high-performing and larger turboprops is intensifying, and this fifth reorder is a great example of the Q400 turboprop success story and the value it creates for clients around the world.”

Meanwhile, Chicago is joining the Ethiopian Airlines network on 10 June with the launch of a three-flights-a-week Boeing B787-8 Dreamliner service between Addis Ababa and O’Hare International Airport.

The 13hr 45min flight from Chicago will be the only non-stop service connecting Chicago to Africa. Flights to Chicago will stop in Dublin on the way from Ethiopia.
