A380 flex for Qantas

In what has been interpreted as a move to boost sales but which Airbus says is “part of the efficiency-boosting A380 cabin enablers”, the manufacturer has developed a new option for its Super-jumbo called Cabin-Flex, with Qantas as launch customer.

It consists of an upper-deck cabin door area arrangement which Airbus says is suitable for premium configuration with lower density seat counts so airlines gain revenue-earning extra seating without compromising passenger comfort.

Qantas says it will fit Cabin-Flex, which is available either for line-fit or retrofit and is said to bring up to seven extra Business Class seats or 11 more Premium Economy seats, on its current A380 fleet from mid-2019.

Airbus said: “In terms of economics, this translates into a typical return-on-investment within around one year for the retrofit solution. The option, is therefore a very effective way to increase the premium seat-count in the upper-deck.”

More than 220 A380s are now in service with 13 airlines worldwide, serving 60 destinations. More than 200 airports can accommodate the jet, which is the largest commercial passenger aircraft now flying.
