Wizz beefs up Luton

In a double celebration, Wizz Air saw the arrival last week of a fourth allocated aircraft to its Luton fleet and on the same day launched the only low-fare direct flight connecting the UK and Albania, from Luton to the capital Tirana.

Chief corporate officer Owain Jones said arrival of the new Airbus aircraft, one of eight to be deployed at the Luton base by the end of this summer, highlighted its continued investment in the UK market, offering passengers more opportunity to do business across Europe.

Luton – Tirana flights are operating on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with another seven new routes from Luton set to join the network this year. Athens, Reykjavik, Lviv and Larnaca are due to start soon.

By the end of 2018, Wizz plans to offer 47 destinations to 23 countries from Luton, increasing capacity in the UK by 14%. The expansion is part of the biggest operational leap in the airline’s history.

In all, 21 aircraft are being allocated to Wizz European bases across 17 weeks, supporting 700 additional weekly departures, following a £2bn-plus investment at 11 bases in the UK, Austria, Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Romania and Georgia.

All flights are operated on 180-seat Airbus A320s and 230-seat Airbus A321s. New A321 deliveries started in November 2015.
