Eurowings long-haul takes off

Las Vegas, Cancun and Mauritius were all in the spotlight at Munich last week as Eurowings, which claims to be currently Europe’s fastest-growing airline, launched its low-cost long-haul programme. Fort Myers joins the list on 1 May.

These routes will be supplemented with a weekly flight to Caribbean destinations Varadero from 2 May, Punta Cana from 4 May, Montego Bay from 18 July and Puerto Plata from 19 July. Windhoek joins from 7 May and Bangkok from 15 June.

Eurowings CCO Oliver Wagner said: “This expansion of our long-haul offering is to meet high demand. With 15 new routes and 41 destinations from Munich, we’re doubling our growth and will carry up to 2m passengers.”

As part of the expansion, Eurowings is basing three Airbus A330s at the German hub to join a fleet of seven short- and medium-haul aircraft already there, which the airline says provide ideal conditions for supplying the long-haul routes with feeder flights.

Munich Airport president and CEO Michael Kerkloh said: “We’re delighted Eurowings is expanding its commitment here, offering long-haul flights from Munich for the first time and closing a supply gap at the airport.”
