RAF Museum new look

Aviation fans have a major transformation of the RAF Museum’s London home at the historic Hendon airfield to look forward to this year as part of celebrations marking the centenary of the Royal Air Force.

Part of the multi-million-pound project involves new landscaping of the site to include outdoor picnic areas, a children’s playground, restaurant, visitor car parking and fully accessible pathways.

Two new galleries will explore the first 100 years of the RAF, its roles in the modern world and its future contribution and technology, while a third new exhibition will focus on the era from the Falklands conflict of the early 1980s to current operations.

More than 500 previously-unseen artefacts relating to the force’s history will be on display and the museum is also launching RAF Stories, an online digital project to gather accounts of military flying exploits.

The newly-developed exhibitions will open at the end of June as part of a wider calendar of events across the country celebrating and commemorating the centenary.

These include a Spitfire 10k run, open-cockpit evenings and family events such as the Hendon Pageant and the Family Festival of Flight.

Congratulations to the RAF Museum at Hendon and without wishing to steal their thunder I'd like to add that Brqooklands Museum Weybridge has also undergone a very significant upgrade in respect of the way many of the Aviation related exhibits are displayed. Well worth the visit even if you've been before.
