Bizav on Brexit

The European Business Aviation Association (EBAA) in co-operation with the British Business Aviation Association (BBGA) and Clyde & Co published its Brexit analysis last week.

It called on negotiators in both Brussels and London to preserve the current aviation relationship as far as possible, with EBAA CEO Brandon Mitchener highlighting the UK’s importance in the sector, where 374,000 European jobs directly or indirectly depend.

Brexit was also on the agenda at the Corporate Jet Investor Conference (see in this issue) in London last week.

A legal panel comprising Mark Bisset from Clyde & Co; Alan Cunningham, DLA Piper and Jeremy Robinson, Watson Farley & Williams, suggested it was likely there would be no separate aviation deal.  Rather it could all get lumped in with the free-trade arrangement.  UK bizav operators could lose some freedoms (such as cabotage rights).  Some are considering seeking European AOCs similar to easyJet.  Mr Cunningham warned that corporate operators, without scheduled routes, would find this path difficult.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) would lose out if the UK did not participate in its work and rules Mr Cunningham noted.  The UK CAA contributes to some 30% of revenue and offers considerable expertise.

Summing up Mark Bisset stated “(Brexit) It is not chaos. It is simply complicated.”
