Cycling and London

Design work is to begin on the next generation of the controversial cycle routes in inner and outer London.

The existing routes have been generally a success although complaints in letter columns and on line are regular regarding the road behaviour of some two wheelers.  The Serpentine route through Hyde Park is still causing problems for car drivers at night due to cyclists’ strong lights sometimes blinding motorists as they appear on their left hand side.

Transport for London’s (TfL’s) innovative Strategic Cycling Analysis identified the top 25 connections where new cycling infrastructure is required to enable more people to cycle.

Further work between TfL and the boroughs has identified initially six routes to take forward to the design stage. These are: Lea Bridge to Dalston, Ilford to Barking Riverside, Hackney to the Isle of Dogs, Rotherhithe to Peckham, Tottenham Hale to Camden and Wembley to Willesden Junction.

The Mayor is also committed to providing a new river crossing between Rotherhithe and Canary Wharf for pedestrians and cyclists, which ultimately could link the proposed cycle routes between Hackney and Peckham to create a continuous 12km cycle route.

London City Airport does not appear to feature in the plans, the flat former dockland area with some high density housing, seemingly ideal for the project.

It is doubtless true that breathing in polluted air but if more cycled or walked and fewer drove there would be less polluted air. My experience of the Blackfriars'Bridge cycleway is that it is often very busy.

I am puzzled, given the high levels of road sourced pollution in London, why cycling is encouraged. With all that deep breathing of polluted air, it must be bad for the health. I would also note from experience, the negative impact on buses, because of their need to pull frequently into the curb. Yes, a bit more balance please.

The observation on empty cycle lanes can be matched with one about the empty seats in cars with one occupant, or the large SUVs with one and a half occupants. Comment made for balance and for discussion!

In the area where I live, West Kensington, a new Cycle Superhighway has been proposed (Kensington to Hounslow via Chiswick) and the local opposition is extremely strong. The principle reasons are that it will be very congesting, reducing general road traffic to single file in both directions and that it is wrong to remove so much road space from all users and allocate it to a tiny minority of road users. In parts of London where these cycle lanes have been introduced, there is substantial additional congestion but the cycle lanes are empty. (See attached images). Whilst adding cycle lanes might sound like a good idea, what happens in practice is a dreadful, dogma-driven xxxx-up.
