JAL links up with Aeroflot

A memorandum of understanding for a strategic cooperation agreement to pursue commercial opportunities and provide more options for travel between Russia and Japan was signed last week by Aeroflot and Japan Air Lines.

The carriers say they will work together to stimulate travel between the two countries with codeshare cooperation between Japan and Russia and on some Aeroflot domestic flights as a first step.

JAL domestic and international flights will also be added on implementation of the first stage of the codeshare cooperation, which is planned for next spring, while JAL and Aeroflot will also pursue the development of the partnership in other areas.

These will include frequent flyer programmes and airport relocation, while the two companies say they will also be “considering a joint business” in the future.

JAL executive vice president Tadashi Fujita said: “JAL is the only airline in Japan operating to Russia for more than 50 years and the launch of this partnership with Aeroflot demonstrates our strong commitment to this very important market.”

JAL currently operates four weekly flights between Tokyo Narita Airport and Moscow Domodedovo using Boeing B787-8 aircraft. Aeroflot has daily non-stops between  Moscow Sheremetyevo and Tokyo Narita using the Airbus A330-300.
