Jersey has witnessed its first “Freedom to Fly” course after Guernsey-based carrier Blue Islands arranged for 20 residents to attempt to conquer their fear of flying with a presentation by training manager Chris Stubbs followed by a flight.
Stubbs dealt with every aspect of aviation, from how aircraft stay in the air to the rigorous regulations which surround their operation, while Mo Harford Bury from Momentum Training spoke on how to cope with, manage and overcome fear.
Blue Islands CEO Rob Veron said: “The course was a total success. Conditions for the special experience flight were extremely windy so it was far from the perfect day to fly, but that stopped no one.
“A lot of people take getting on a plane for granted but for those scared of doing so, it severely limits their options when living on an island. I was extremely heartened to hear all the stories from those who took part.”
Veron said one woman had not been in an aircraft for 14 years before the course. Another moved from the US more than 30 years ago and had been too scared to fly back to visit her family, but now said she felt confident enough to go.
