United launches 'super-app'

A new enhancement to its app allowing passengers to receive boarding passes on their smartphones when connecting to 19 airline partners has been introduced by United Airlines. More connections are to be added “in the near future”.

The carrier says it is the first US airline to offer the feature. It available for passengers traveling on United who are making an onward connection on another carrier. United says its app is used more than 500m times a year by customers.

Chief customer officer Kate Gebo said the development was part of a continuous programme of improvements to the app. “We found simply allowing passengers to access boarding passes for their entire itineraries within the same app made a big difference,” she added.

“Our partnerships with Star Alliance carriers and other partner airlines can take our customers to more than 1,000 destinations worldwide, and we’re excited to be the first US carrier to provide customers with this.”

The facility not only covers booking flights but also earning and redeeming airmiles through United’s MileagePlus loyalty programme on its partner airlines through the app.
