United's new record

Claiming a new distance record, United Airlines yesterday, Sunday, launched daily nonstop flights between Singapore and Los Angeles, a 14,000km (8,700mi) journey the carrier says is currently the world's longest nonstop flight to or from the US.

Flight UA38 from Changi Airport, Singapore, is about 15hr 15min, according to United, while the return flight, UA37, from Los Angeles is more than 2hr longer at 17hr 55min.

The record was held previously by Qantas, which operates an 13,800km (8,575mi) flight between Dallas and Sydney, and before that by United's San Francisco – Singapore route at 13,592km (8,446mi) launched last year.

Both Los Angeles and San Francisco routes are operated with 250-seat Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. United Airline is the only airline operating a direct flight between Singapore and Los Angeles.

For yesterday’s inaugural, passengers departing Singapore were greeted by Hollywood celebrity impersonators a cake-cutting ceremony in a celebration attended by Changi Airport CEO Lee Seow Hiang and Singapore US Embassy chargé d'affaires Stephanie Syptak-Ramnath.

David Hilfman, United's senior vice president of worldwide sales, said the new route would consolidate the airline's position in Asia, with Singapore a key destination for business travellers.
