£4m investment at Cardiff

Plans for further improvements to the terminal and car park facilities at Cardiff Airport were unveiled last week in a £4m investment that officials say will see projects completed in time for next summer.

The work is a continuation of developments since the change of ownership in 2013 and includes an expanded executive lounge, additional seating areas in the departure lounge, new Costa Coffee outlets in the arrivals hall and departure lounge and a larger WHSmith store.

Work is also going ahead to upgrade the hold baggage screening system to meet enhanced security requirements and providing new meet-and-greet car parking for customers with a dedicated area for drop off and pick up close to the terminal. There will also be a new car hire centre close to the terminal.

Airport chief executive Deb Barber said: "The latest investment will significantly transform the experience for customers, offering more choice and quality in modern, welcoming surroundings.”

The news comes as Qatar Airways has confirmed it will begin daily direct flights between Cardiff and Hamad International Airport in Doha, one of the world's largest aviation hubs, next May.

The airline announced its plans in April but has now revealed the timetable. Flights will be by Boeing B787 Dreamliner, seating 254 passengers.
