Africa's first B787-9

Africa’s first Boeing B787-9 entered the fleet at Ethiopian Airlines, the continent’s largest aviation group, on Friday, the second of the Dreamliner family to join after Ethiopian in 2012 became the first outside Japan to receive and operate the B787-8.

Group CEO Tewolde GebreMariam, said: “Continuing our legacy of pioneering aviation technology in Africa, we are proud to celebrate yet another first with the introduction of the B787-9 into our young and fast-growing fleet.

“The B787 is our core fleet with 20 aircraft in service. Our investment in latest-technology aircraft such as the B787 and A350 makes us among the few airlines in the world to operate these two most cutting-edge airplanes simultaneously.

“It is also part and parcel of our Vision 2025 strategy and our commitment to offer the ultimate on-board comfort. We will continue to invest in latest-technology aircraft with the view to avail passengers the best possible travel experience.”

Ethiopian currently flies to more than 100 international destinations in five continents using a fleet of 93 aircraft, 20 of them Dreamliners deployed on long-haul routes. The airline took delivery of its first B787s in 2011.
