A $13.8bn deal for 20 Boeing B777-9s and 19 B787-10s was formally announced by the manufacturer and Singapore Airlines last week.
The announcement took place during a ceremony at the White House witnessed by US president Donald Trump and Singapore’s prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong.
The parties say the order, previously attributed to an unidentified customer, will sustain thousands of US suppliers and more than 70,000 direct and indirect US jobs during the delivery period of this contract.
Others at the ceremony included SIA CEO Goh Choon Phong and Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO Kevin McAllister, with SIA chairman Peter Seah and Boeing regional senior vice-president Dinesh Keskar.
Singapore Airlines has more than 50 B777s in service and is launch customer for the B787-10, scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2018. With a prior order for 30 B787-10s, the airline now has 49 on order, making it the largest customer for the type.
SIA says the B787-10 will serve its medium-range operations while partnering with the B777-9 for long-haul routes. Subsidiaries SilkAir, Scoot and SIA Cargo also operate Boeing aircraft including the B737 MAX 8, B737-800 and B787.
