Virgin Atlantic is claiming to have given London – Miami passengers the best view of last week's long-awaited total solar eclipse with its Flight VS5 from Heathrow commanded by Capt Jason Shergold circling at 35,000ft over the US to allow fans an unclouded view.
All 260 on board were given special eclipse glasses to watch the event safely, and the airline worked with wi-fi provider Panasonic to boost the signal on board, allowing much sharing of photos on social media under the hashtag #livefromvirgin
The eclipse was visible for just over a 100mi radius and VS5 flew into the area at just the right time, with the pilots working with air traffic control to track the phenomenon for as long as possible.
