Level plumps for A330

Three more Airbus A330-200s have been ordered by IAG's newly launched long-haul budget airline Level with delivery by next summer in time for the carrier’s planned expansion.

The airline was launched in June, flying from Barcelona El Prat Airport to Los Angeles, San Francisco (Oakland), Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic and Buenos Aires (BTN 5 June).

IAG chief executive Willie Walsh said at the time the fleet would be expanded from two to five, but did not confirm the type of aircraft. Of the new order, he said: “Level has already been incredibly successful and these aircraft will enable it to expand.

“Long-haul flights are now available to many people for the first time and we’re extremely pleased with the customer response in all of Level’s markets. It will continue to stimulate demand by providing people with more choice.”

While Walsh said Level was looking at other European bases for itself, the expansion plans are partly to counter competition from rival long-haul carrier Norwegian, which also launched transatlantic routes from Barcelona last month.

Level took off on 1 June with a flight from Barcelona – Los Angeles, followed by a three-a-week service to Oakland, twice-weekly operations to Punta Cana and a three-a-week schedule to Buenos Aires.
