A free stopover programme introduced a year ago by TAP Air Portugal is being extended after nearly 70,000 passengers took advantage of the deal, the airline said last week.
The original scheme allowed travellers to stay in Lisbon and Porto for up to three days while en route to destinations in Portugal and throughout Europe and Africa for no additional airfare. The three days is now being extended from September to five.
TAP marked the first anniversary of the programme by unveiling one of its A330-300s with a new livery highlighting its home country. The aircraft will shortly begin service between Portugal and North America.
TAP unveiled the stopover offer last July to encourage long-haul passengers transiting through Lisbon or Porto to stay and explore. Offers include hotel discounts, free wine in restaurants, visits to museums, or dolphin watching in the River Sado.
Also from September, stopover passengers will be able to create multi-destination itineraries so they can travel from one destination and return from another and still qualify for a stopover in Lisbon or Porto on the outbound or return leg.
Stopover visits are now also available on one-way travel to Europe or Africa where previously round-trip travel was necessary to qualify.
