New bases at Stansted, Birmingham and Paris CDG are being opened by the Scandinavian-based airline Primera Air ahead of the launch of direct flights to New York and Boston next year.
From next April, the company will offer daily services to New York Newark and from May will add four a week to Boston Logan. The news about Birmingham came days after United Airlines said it was suspending flights from the Midlands airport (BTN last week).
Primera, which says it will announce another transatlantic route from Stansted in a few weeks, will operate the flights with new Airbus A321neo aircraft with full-service premium and low-fare economy cabins, free wi-fi and onboard charging points.
President and chairman Andri Ingolfsson said: “With our new Airbus A321neo, we are opening routes traditionally served previously only by wide-body aircraft. We are very proud to be offering a low-fare/high quality product and service concept that will be perfect both for business as well as leisure travellers.”
Stansted chief executive Andrew Cowan added: “We know from our customers there is enormous demand for flights to New York and Boston from London and the east of England, so this is fantastic news for passengers wanting excellent service and the convenience of flying transatlantic from their local airport.”
