Pisa is easier

The PisaMover automated people mover between Pisa Airport and Pisa Centrale station, which is about 1km distant and connects to any destination on the Italian rail network, has opened, writes Andrew Sharp.

The airport end of the high-speed fully automatic system is less than 40m from the passenger terminal and runs every 5-8min between 06:00 and midnight with a connection to the 1,400-space Aurelia car parking lot on the way.

The travel time is about 5min, and the single fare is €2.70 (about £2.30), or €1.20 (£1) on Sundays and public holidays. The project has cost €71m, of which €21m was European funding and €50m came from private investors. The operating concession lasts for 36 years.

The people-mover, on an elevated structure, replaces a regional rail line which ran relatively infrequently at ground level and as well as the central station also offered a few direct services to Florence. It closed at the end of 2013.

Removing this conventional railway to make way for the people-mover created access to formerly rail-locked land and allowed it to be developed for, among other things, a major parking site.
