British Airways CityFlyer is today (Monday 6 March) celebrating 10 years of flights from London City Airport (LCY). In the first 12 months, it moved 400,000 passengers. In 2016, it was more than 2m.
BA CityFlyer is seen by the travelling public as British Airways but in fact holds its own Air Operators Certificate (AOC) and reports independently to the main board. Currently, it operates 20 Embraer E series aircraft and also leases in a pair of Saab 2000s for thinner routes. The week-daily service to and from New York JFK is a separate British Airways mainline operation but viewed by the travelling public as part of the London City BA operation. It arrived in 2009.
In the early days, BA CityFlyer operated just six routes, but for this summer will fly to 30 destinations from LCY including the Greek islands of Mykonos, Santorini and Skiathos with a flight time of less than 4hr. It will also offer flights from Birmingham, Bristol, Dublin, Manchester and Stansted airports.
“London City Airport has changed much over the past 10 years with its recently reworked and excellent lounge facilities, but the real virtue remains the same – it’s quick and easy to use,” said BA CityFlyer general manager commercial and customer Luke Hayhoe.
“Speed of access and the fastest station arrival (DLR) of any important major international business gateway – customers love it.”
