A “strong performance” over eight months and record punctuality have earned Virgin Trains a 5-star rating for reliability in the latest Annual Passenger Survey from Which?
The operator says the punctuality achievements on the west coast follow a combined effort with Network Rail to prevent delays. More than 88% of trains arrived on time over the past 12 months, an improvement of eight percentage points since comparable records began two decades ago.
“This has resulted in eight months of strong performance – with PPM (punctuality) figures of more than 90% – and a significant reduction in ‘bad days’,” Virgin added. “The companies started working together in 2009, leading to improvements on the west coast main line each year.”
Virgin said the project had seen 100 days with a PPM of 90% or above in the past six months, compared with 58 days in the same period two years ago. In addition, the last period had seen more than 45% of trains arrive early.
Virgin Trains west coast commercial operations director Peter Broadley said: “We’re pleased with the improvements made by Network Rail and our own team and the latest performance figures on the west coast are testament to how far we’ve come.”
