Norwegian to halve NY fares

Flights between Edinburgh to New York for less than £60 each way are on the way this summer from pioneering low-cost carrier Norwegian, according to reports.

The Daily Telegraph among other sources said the fares will be available on new Boeing 737MAX aircraft that are due to enter service and the airline also plans to cut prices by using secondary airports in New York state, rather than JFK.

If the reports are confirmed, it will give Norwegian, which already flies twice daily between Gatwick and New York from £125 each way, added impetus for what it is calling its biggest year yet in 2017.

As well as introducing new aircraft, Norwegian says it will launch exclusive new routes, including its first long-haul flights outside the US, and more affordable flights on direct low-cost transatlantic services from more UK cities.

Norwegian carried more than 4.5m passengers last year from London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Birmingham airports and launched more than 10 new services from the UK, including routes to Boston, Oakland-San Francisco and Las Vegas.

It also flew more than 4m passengers to and from Gatwick for the first time in a single year.
