Further expansion of the low-cost long-haul network at Cologne Bonn Airport took place last week with the departure of Eurowings’ inaugural flight to Havana. The Lufthansa Group carrier has also announced two more long-haul launches next summer.
These are a twice-weekly service to Windhoek (Namibia), and conversion of the currently chartered service to Montego Bay to a two-a-week scheduled operation.
Eurowings’ new weekly service to Cuba’s capital city utilises the airline’s 310-seat A330-200s on the 8,011km sector, becoming the German hub’s eighth Caribbean link. The carrier’s new link joins the existing Varadero service, increasing the airport’s weekly Cuban capacity by 33%.
Airport chairman Michael Garvens said: “We are delighted Eurowings is continuing to expand its portfolio here. The new route to Havana, and now a link to southern Africa, will give long-distance travellers more reasons to use our airport.”
In addition to the new routes, Eurowings connects Cologne Bonn with direct scheduled services to Miami; Bangkok and Phuket (Thailand); Puerto Plata and Puerto Cana (Dominican Republic); Cancun; and Mauritius.
During the 2017 peak season, the carrier will launch three further links to the US – Orlando, Seattle – Tacoma and Las Vegas – seeing the airline serve 18 long-haul destinations from the airport.
