Southampton security upgrade

Security measures were being enhanced at Southampton Airport last week as it became one of four in the UK to introduce the latest state-of-the-art non-invasive body-scanning technology in response to Department for Transport (DfT) regulations.

The Rohde and Schwartz security scanner can detect a wide range of threats in a matter of seconds to protect passengers and will be used alongside the airport’s existing systems.

It uses millimetre-wave technology at a power output many times lower than portable personal devices such as mobile phones to produce a generic, mannequin-style image when a passenger passes through it.

Areas that may require further investigation are highlighted and then deleted automatically after clearance by a security officer. The scanner has been deemed safe by the UK government as not posing any risk to health.

Security operations manager Simon Young said: “Security is our absolute priority. We are committed to ensuring the safety of the hundreds and thousands of passengers who pass through the airport every year and the introduction of this scanner is in response to rules set out by DfT.

“The technology is designed to maintain the privacy of the passenger while ensuring the safety and security of the airport, something which is paramount to us.”
