United cutback continues

Manchester has joined the United Airlines casualty list after the carrier announced it was stopping its seasonal service between the city and Washington DC next summer. It follows the scrapping by the airline of its Belfast – New York Newark service (BTN 7 November).

In a statement last week, the airline said: “United will discontinue its service between Manchester and Washington (Dulles). This service is currently suspended for the winter season and will not return on April 7, 2017 as previously planned. We have regretfully taken this decision because of the route’s poor financial performance.”

Potential over-capacity on the Atlantic next year is also causing concern for US carriers with a range of new flights due to be launched from Europe. United has already announced the suspension of its Munich – Houston and Hamburg – New York Newark services between January and next spring.

In better news for the carrier, United will introduce the new Boeing B777-300ERs on flights between San Francisco and Hong Kong on 25 March, replacing its B747-400s.

The 777-300ERs will be the first aircraft in the United fleet to feature the new Polaris Business Class cabin, with 60 lie-flat seats in a 1+2+1 configuration.
