Glasgow's trendy 'bot

Justifying its high-tech reputation once again, Glasgow Airport last week introduced its passengers to GLAdys – described as “the UK’s first humanoid robot airport ambassador”.

With her name derived from Glasgow’s IATA code, GLAdys is based in the main departures area and has initially been programmed to entertain passengers of all ages as they pass through.

The unveiling is part of the airport’s Digital Passenger Experience Project, introduced to explore how customer engagement and communication can be enhanced further using digital technology.

GLAdys, escorted by the ambassador team, has been programmed with three main entertainment functions for passengers to select – for the festive period, she is singing and dancing to Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Rocking around the Christmas Tree and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

GLAdys, 4ft tall, weighing 28kg and with a 10.1in touch-display screen, will also keep young passengers entertained in the terminal by telling three festive tales: Twas the Night before Christmas, When Santa Claus Comes, and Santa’s Workshop.

Passengers can pose for pictures with GLAdys thanks to a hand-mounted selfie camera and the photographs sent to individual email address and/or to Glasgow’s digital team for use on the airport’s social media channel with a #GLAdysRobot hashtag.
