AA engine fire at Chicago

An engine fire in an American Airlines Boeing 767 at Chicago’s O'Hare International Airport on Friday could have been catastrophic had it happened seconds later when the aircraft was in the air, officials said.

The pilot of Flight 383, which was bound for Miami and carrying 161 passengers and nine crew, aborted the take-off just before lifting off, the airline said. Twenty passengers were reported to have suffered minor injuries as the aircraft was evacuated.

American said the pilots reported “an engine-related mechanical issue”. People on the aircraft reported a loud bang followed by “massive” flames on the starboard side as the 767 taxied down the runway.

The aircraft was equipped with the General Electric CF6 engine, regarded as the "workhorse" of the commercial aviation industry. GE said it was dispatching investigators to the scene.

One passenger said cabin crew were about 30sec into the preflight safety speech and had just finished the part about not taking luggage when the emergency occurred. Despite that, several passengers still tried to take their luggage, which slowed the evacuation.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by US National Transportation Safety Board.
