The latest milestone in the US$8.5bn modernisation of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the new Terminal 6, was unveiled on Wednesday by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and Westfield.
Boasting a bold design and 21 new retail and dining outlets, it is the second new development of its kind unveiled this year following the transformation of Terminal 2, which opened in February.
The US$70.5m project, inspired by the city’s iconic Sunset Boulevard, has involved redesigning more than 22,000sq ft of space, including nearly 5,300sq ft of improvements to common areas.
LAWA CEO Deborah Flint said: “We’re raising the bar for what’s possible at an airport. We are providing passengers with a special experience that allows them to sample the best of LA, food and drink, special shops and modern amenities.”
Officials said the idea behind the new design was to unify a terminal that had been developed over 40 years. The central satellite was built in 1961, and a connector was added later for the 1984 Olympics. A connector at the south end was built in the 1990s to accommodate additional growth.
