Ethiopian expands at home

Two new domestic services between Addis Ababa and Dembi Dolo and Kebri Dahar have been announced by Ethiopian Airlines with an initial three-a-week schedule on Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays using the Bombardier Q400NG.

The airline has a network of 19 domestic destinations and plans to increase this to 26 over the next few years to ensure better air connectivity across the sprawling country.

CEO Tewolde GebreMariam said: “Air transport is an essential public service and Ethiopian Airlines has been discharging its national obligation to provide critical air connectivity options and thereby catalyse the Ethiopia’s Growth and Transformation programme.

“Moreover, with the opening of new universities parallel to the expansion of Industry zones across the country, the service will enable academicians, investors and others to enjoy prompt connectivity options."

Ethiopian is currently implementing a 15-year strategic plan, Vision 2025, with the objective of becoming the leading aviation group in Africa with seven distinct business divisions.

These cover Ethiopian Domestic and Regional Airline; Ethiopian International Passenger Airline; Ethiopian Cargo; Ethiopian MRO; Ethiopian Aviation Academy; Ethiopian In-flight Catering Services; and Ethiopian Ground Service.

The carrier has registered an average growth of 25% in the past seven years.
