New Zealand breakthrough

Wellington International Airport has welcomed Singapore Airlines, marking a breakthrough for the New Zealand capital into a new era of international travel.

Promoted as “The Capital Express”, the route links Wellington, the seat of government in New Zealand, to its counterpart in Australia, and onwards to Singapore.

Wellington Airport’s chief executive, Steve Sanderson, said it was a proud moment to see the Singapore Airlines tail in Wellington.

“This is an historic day for our airport and a major step-change for Wellington,” he said. “It will provide more efficient onward connections to Singapore and beyond.”

The Capital Express route will operate four flights a week to Singapore via Canberra and cut travel time between Wellington and Canberra from seven hours to three. Travellers can stay on the same Boeing 777 all the way to Singapore and connect both ways to Singapore Airlines on its global network in Asia, Europe and other parts of the world.
