Flights between four US cities – Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, Newark and Oakland – and Barcelona are being planned by Norwegian Air from next summer as the carrier sets about increasing its profile in North America.
The announcement is also seen as an attempt to kick-start talks over plans by the airline’s Irish subsidiary, Norwegian Air International to operate services to the US from Ireland. These have been in abeyance for more than two years after opposition from unions and US carriers.
Of the new flights, scheduled to start next June, Norwegian Air chief commercial officer Thomas Ramdahl said: “Continued US expansion is key to Norwegian’s global strategy…
“We now offer a greater amount of nonstop routes from the US to Europe than any other European airline (and) we look forward to continue adding additional routes and frequencies.
Norwegian will operate the flights with the B787 Dreamliner in Premium Economy and Economy Class layout.
Twice-weekly flights from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood to Barcelona start on 22 August, the Los Angeles service begins on 5 June, Newark flights from 6 June and Oakland from 7 June.
