Strikes at Virgin Trains and Eurostar were halted last week. Action at Eurostar planned for the past weekend and over the coming bank holiday was called off at the last minute, enabling the company to run a revised timetable with two services cancelled on Saturday and yesterday and a normal timetable next weekend.
At Virgin Trains, the RMT rail union suspended industrial action on Tuesday and agreed to hold further talks after the company repeated its assurances, including one of no compulsory redundancies, over planned service changes.
Virgin Trains had promised a full timetable during the three 24hr stoppages and overtime ban planned for the East Coast route over this month’s bank holiday weekend.
The train company’s managing director for the East Coast, David Horne, welcomed the decision. “We’re making exciting changes on the East Coast as part of the customer-centric revolution which has seen us embark on a £140m investment programme in our trains and stations,” he noted.
“We want a service that focuses firmly on the customer and look forward to discussing these further with representatives of the RMT.”
