Expansion at Ben Gurion

Terminal 1 at Ben Gurion International Airport will return to full activity by next summer, the Israel Airports Authority announced last week.

The body said the number of flights into Israel had increased significantly following the open-skies agreement with the EU announced in 2013, with many carriers departing from Terminal 1.

It had therefore been decided to provide a new VIP lounge and more duty-free shops and restaurants for departing passengers.

Nine new gateways will also be opening to accommodate the increase in interest from carriers in flying to Israel.

Transportation minister Israel Katz said: “With the signing of the agreement, I instructed the authority to prepare Terminal 1 and it will open to full international activity in 2017.

“The open-skies reform has increased available destinations and has lowered airfares, which have become affordable for all.

“I am proud that, despite all the objections, we signed an agreement with Europe and have taken an additional step in lowering the cost of travelling to Israel."
