Airport trains boost

In good news for passengers using Heathrow, Bakerloo Line trains began stopping again at Paddington station last Monday (1 August) after improvement work, including escalator renewal and preparation for Crossrail's Elizabeth Line, finished nearly two weeks ahead of schedule.

The Bakerloo Line platforms at Paddington closed nearly four months ago on 2 April. They re-opened after engineers replaced thousands of moving components in the escalators, which will now serve passengers for another 20 years.

The work also involved digging a new 165m tunnel underneath the station in preparation for Elizabeth Line services, which will also benefit airport users, in 2018.

A cross-passage has been created between the Bakerloo Line platforms and the Elizabeth Line to incorporate escalators and a lift so customers can interchange between the two services easily.

The first images of the new Elizabeth Line trains for Crossrail have been released by Transport for London (TfL).

The trains will enter service next May on TfL Rail between Liverpool Street and Shenfield. The first trains will be seven carriages and 160m long to fit existing platforms at Liverpool Street.

Nine-carriage 200m trains to carry up to 1,500 people will be introduced from May 2018, initially between Heathrow and Paddington.
