JetBlue No 1 for Cuba

New York-based JetBlue Airways says it is on track to launch scheduled commercial flights between the US and Cuba on 31 August, with two other carriers close behind.

Cuba and the US agreed last year to restore regular airline services and travel rules were relaxed earlier this year to allow independent visits for educational, cultural and other authorised purposes, but Americans still had to travel on charters.

JetBlue plans to begin its service with thrice-weekly flights between the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida and Santa Clara airport, with fares from US$99 one-way.

It says it will upgrade this to daily flights from 1 October and also begin daily operations from Fort Lauderdale to Camaguey from 3 November and to Holguin from 10 November.

Fort Lauderdale-based Silver Airways is set to be the second US airline to operate to Cuba, with service from its home base to Santa Clara on 1 September.

American Airlines will begin flying from Miami to Cienfuegos and Holguin on 7 September, adding flights to Camaguey and Santa Clara on 9 September and to Varadero on 11 September.

Flights between the US and Havana ae awaiting final approval but could begin this autumn.
