Chris Amon

With the exception of the evergreen John Surtees perhaps the last of the1960's generation of motor racing greats that included Jack Brabham, Jim Clark and Graham Hill, Chris Amon (73) MBE has passed on. The New Zealander will go down in history as the only Ferrari No1 never to win a Grand Prix. He was undoubtedly one of the best.

Amon’s name in the UK is possibly better known for the short-lived partnership with fellow kiwi Bill Bryce, creating Brymon Airways, one of the instigators of London City Airport.

While he retired as an active driver in the mid-1970s and was a busy North Island farmer, motor racing was always in Amon’s blood, and for many years he was seen and heard as an energetic personality and commentator in the New Zealand motor-racing scene.

He was twice married, first in 1966 to the American actress Barbara Anne McLain, and secondly in 1977 to Tish Wotherspoon, whom he had met in England. She survives him with their daughter, Georgie, and twin sons James and Alex.
