New-version SSJ100 on the blocks

Sukhoi trumped the appearance of its Superjet 100 (SSJ100) at Farnborough by taking the concept to a new level with a luxury version designed for professional athletes and sports teams.

The company says the interior of its new SportJet contains advanced sports science equipment to help athletes to rest, recover and prepare from and for events.

The aircraft is due to be produced in 2018. The SSJ100 new-generation regional jet itself was on-site at Farnborough in CityJet livery, reflecting the airline’s status as the first European customer.

CityJet has ordered 15 of the SSJ100s with a further 16 options. The first SSJ100, which has a cabin height of 2m-plus, is flying in Europe on the CityJet network in a 98-seat five-abreast configuration with a 32in pitch.

Foreshadowing the SportJet announcement, the CityJet SSJ100 performed its first regular flight taking the Ireland team to Euro 16. The aircraft can now be seen at 120 airports worldwide including Russia and Mexico as well as Europe, and Sukhoi says it is advancing into new markets.

In anticipation of that, Sukhoi is opening its first overseas client liaison office in Beijing in what the company says is the first step to implementing the brand's global marketing.
