Non-stop operations between Munich and Tehran have been relaunched by Lufthansa after being suspended in summer 2006.
The airline is running an Airbus A330-300 on the route three times a week, complementing a daily Frankfurt – Tehran by Boeing B747-400. Lufthansa Group member Austrian Airlines is also flying between Vienna and Tehran up to twice a week using an Airbus A320.
Thomas Winkelmann, CEO of Lufthansa’s Munich hub, said improving business relations with Tehran were resulting in a “significantly higher demand” for flights to the Iranian capital.
He noted that half of Iran’s major industries were located in Teheran, especially oil and gas companies. Textile, agriculture and building materials industries were other economic sectors contributing to the demand.
In further business-orientated expansion, Lufthansa has begun non-stop operation by Airbus A340-300 between Frankfurt and San José in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley, a 12hr flight.
San José is noted worldwide for start-ups and high-tech industry, with numerous major car manufacturers operating their research laboratories there.
